If you’re a fresh grad or just started working with a salary of RM2,000 per month and drive minimally. Let’s say you only drive to and from work daily or just driving around town. You’re spending about RM500 a month on petrol and you’re looking for a credit card to cover some of your petrol costs and make your travel worthwhile.
In this article, we’ll be exploring some cash back credit cards on petrol for those of you who spend about RM500 per month on petrol.
I did some research and prepared a table which we’ll run through some numbers below later.
To apply for the credit cards, you need to meet the minimum income requirement of RM2,000 per month or RM24,000 per year salary.
Before we dive into the credit cards, it’s good to know these informations about petrol cash back credit cards.
Where to use petrol credit cards
Even though the credit cards can be used at petrol stations, not all cards you can spend at any petrol stations. Some cards require you to spend at specific petrol brands to qualify for the cash backs. If you prefer to pump at specific petrol brands, maybe because of your personal preferences or the quality of the petrol the brand uses; then there are dedicated credit cards for such uses. Maybe you like to pump at only BHP, Petronas, Petron, Shell, or Caltex; there are dedicated credit cards for each brand by a bank.
Then there are other credit cards that allow you to collect cash backs from any station and brand you pump at. You are not tied to any specific petrol brand.
When to use petrol credit cards
Then some cards require you to pump on selected days. You need to pump on weekends only, weekdays only, or Fridays and Saturdays only, or on Sundays only. However, if you find yourself pumping mostly on other days or you don’t want to be restricted, then there are other credit card options too.
How to use petrol credit cards
Then on to the cashback and numbers. Even though some cards give very high cashback rates, as much as 5% or more. There is still the spending requirement and the monthly cap on the cashback to consider. You need to spend a certain amount in order to get the cashback. Even then, there is a monthly cap on the cash back.
So, let’s say last month, you spent RM500 on petrol on a weekend using the AEON BiG Visa Classic credit card, you should get a cashback of RM25 but there is a monthly cap of RM15, so you’ll only get RM15 in cashback maximum.
However, if you do find yourself spending more and beyond your usual RM500 spend, maybe due to increase in petrol prices or sudden work travel changes or maybe you want to hit the max monthly cap; you need to spend the following amounts monthly which we’ll cover in the table below.
